‘शेती मधील अरिष्ट आणि महिलांवर होणारा संरचनात्मक हिंसाचार’ ह्या अभ्यासावर आधारित चित्रकथांचा हा संच आहे. ह्या अभ्यासामध्ये महाराष्ट्र, तेलंगणा आणि पंजाबमधील ५० हून अधिक महिलांशी संवाद साधण्यात आला होता. ह्या महिलांचा रोजचा जगण्याचा संघर्ष आणि त्यामध्येही तग धरून राहण्याची जिद्द दाखवणाऱ्या ह्या दहा कथा आहेत. चित्रकथांच्या माध्यमातून उलगडणाऱ्या ह्या गोष्टी त्यांचा आवाज वाचकांपर्यंत पोहोचवतील, आणि शेतकरी महिलांच्या समोर आज जे प्रश्न आहेत त्याबद्दल आस्था निर्माण करतील अशी आम्हांला आशा आहे.

These graphic stories were developed as part of a study on structural violence against rural women in the context of agrarian distress. Based on conversations with over fifty women farmers from Maharashtra, Telangana, and Punjab, the series presents ten stories that highlight their everyday struggles and resilience. Through this format, we aim to make their voices accessible, fostering deeper understanding and empathy for the challenges faced by women in agriculture.

भारतातील शेतीचे स्वरूप व्यापक आणि वैविध्यपूर्ण आहे. शेतीतली हरेक प्रकारची कामं महिला करतात, मात्र शेतकरी म्हटलं की डोळ्यासमोर येतो तो पुरुषच. हा प्रचलित समज खोडून काढणाऱ्या महिला शेतकऱ्यांच्या अनेक कहाण्या कधी सांगितल्याच जात नाहीत. शेतकरी महिला तिहेरी समस्यांच्या सामना करताहेत: बाईपणाची बंधनं, व्यवस्थेची असंवेदनशीलता आणि पर्यावरणीय ऱ्हास. कृषी संकटाच्या झळा सोसत असूनही शेतीची कास त्यांनी सोडलेली नाही. त्यांच्या कहाण्या परिस्थितीची जाणीव अधिक सखोल करतात आणि पर्यायांची दिशाही दाखवतात. याच प्रकारच्या शेतकरी महिलांच्या वास्तवावर आधारित सहा छायाचित्र-कथांची मालिका या पुस्तकात सादर केली आहे. २०२१ ते २०२४ या तीन वर्षांच्या कालावधीत सोपेकॉम आणि मकाम यांनी महराष्ट्र, तेलंगणा आणि पंजाब इथे केलेल्या अभ्यासातील या कथा आहेत.

In India’s vast and diverse agrarian landscape, the faces of farmers are overwhelmingly imagined as male. Yet, buried deep into the land are the stories of countless women whose lives are intimately tied to the soil. This photo essay series unveils their world through six photo essays capturing the quiet fortitude of women who navigate the intersecting crises of agrarian distress, ecological disruptions, and societal inequity. These photo stories emerge from the three-year study, conducted between 2021-24 to understand lives of women farmers across Maharashtra, Telangana and Punjab.

जक्खर : ऊसतोड कामगारांचा दुर्लक्षित प्रवास
|

महाराष्ट्रातील मराठवाडा व इतर दुष्काळग्रस्त भागांतून दरवर्षी लाखो ऊसतोड कामगार सप्टेंबर ते एप्रिल या कालावधीत ऊसउत्पादक भागांकडे स्थलांतर करतात. हे स्थलांतर राज्यांतर्गत तसेच राज्याबाहेर ही होते.
स्थलांतराच्या दरम्यान ऊसतोड कामगारांना अतिशय हालाखीचा प्रवास करावा लागतो. या प्रवासाचे वास्तव समजून घेण्यासाठी ‘सोपेकॉम’ने बीड जिल्ह्यातील ऊसतोड कामगार महिलांशी संवाद साधला. त्या संवादातून समोर आलेल्या अनुभवांच्या आधारे प्रवासातील अडचणी,जोखमी आणि वेदना पुस्तिकेच्या स्वरूपात मांडल्या आहे.

Jakkhar: The Neglected Journey of Sugarcane Harvesting Workers
|

Every year, millions of sugarcane cutting workers migrate from drought-prone regions of Maharashtra particularly Marathwada and other affected areas towards sugarcane-producing regions between September and April. This migration takes place both within the state and beyond state borders.
During this migration, sugarcane workers are forced to endure extremely harsh and distressing travel conditions. To understand the realities of this journey, SOPPECOM engaged in conversations with women sugarcane workers from Beed district. Based on the experiences that emerged from these interactions, this booklet presents the difficulties, risks, and pain associated with their migration journey.

मागील अनेक वर्षांच्या महिला ऊसतोड कामगारांशी होत असलेल्या चर्चांमधून त्यांच्यावर होणाऱ्या अनेक अन्यायाच्या व त्यांनी केलेल्या संघर्षाच्या कथा समोर आल्या. त्यातील ५ निवडक कथांच्या आधारे ऊसतोडीच्या फडावर जगताना आरोग्य, सुरक्षितता, प्रतिष्ठा आणि हक्क यांपासून वंचित राहिलेल्या महिलांचे प्रत्यक्ष अनुभव आपल्या समोर आणणे हे या चित्रकथांचा उद्देश आहे. ही चित्रकथा महाराष्ट्रातील स्थलांतरित महिला ऊसतोड कामगारांच्या आयुष्यातील अदृश्य वेदना, शोषण आणि संघर्षांना आवाज देते.

Intersecting Inequalities:Climate-Induced Migration and Its Effects on Women Farmers and Agricultural Workers in India
(With a focus on Maharashtra, Telangana, and Punjab)

This report builds on the SOPPECOM–MAKAAM study Understanding the Nature, Forms and Implications of Structural Violence Against Rural Women in the Context of Agrarian Distress (2021–2023), which documented the systemic and everyday violence embedded in India’s agrarian structures. While the earlier study highlighted landlessness, precarious labour, indebtedness, ecological degradation, and institutional exclusion, it revealed a critical gap in the analysis of climate change and its gendered impacts. Responding to this gap, the present desk study foregrounds climate change as a key driver of agrarian distress and examines how climate variability and policy responses intersect with gender, caste, and class to deepen vulnerabilities for women farmers and agricultural workers in Maharashtra, Telangana, and Punjab.

SOPPECOM with ACWADAM together did water assessment study for the drought prone areas of Karjat and Jamkhed talukas, Ahmednagar district. The objective of the study was to derive water balances for the two talukas, analyse the situation of the water user associations in the area and detailed hydro-geological assessment of 4 selected micro-watersheds. The study was supported by the Agriculture Development Trust, Baramati.
